| Owing to the high electro-static ignition risk associated with an unearthed road tanker, many sites opt to follow the Cenelec Code of practice recommendations and provide interlocked earth monitoring systems to prevent product transfer if the earthing cable is not connected.
A system
that both checks the quality of its ground connection at the same time
as recognising that the earthing clamp is correctly attached to a road
tanker will automatically ensure the system is operating safely as well
as preventing dangerous misuse. Such
a system will ensure that the following procedure is followed:

CLC/TR 50404 states that: An earthing cable should be connected to the tanker before any operation (eg. opening man lids, connecting pipes) is carried out. It is recommended that interlocks should be provided to prevent loading when the earthing cable is not connected (5.4.4.1.2).
